Methods are described for using the human perceptions of pictures to create a frame knowledge base that represents the semantic content of pictures. A pictorial knowledge base management system is described that uses a conceptual clustering algorithm to learn new conceptual categories of pictures. A comparison is done between machine and human created conceptual categories. The paper shows how a frame knowledge based system can be used for intelligent picture retrieval using learned categories.
